Foundation Awards $32,000 to Local Animal Groups

Lynn County Animal Shelter Receives $2,300 from Baby Grey Fund

LUBBOCK, TX – On Tuesday, March 4, 2014, the Lubbock Area Foundation awarded $32,000 in grants to seven area organizations whose mission is to care for animals that are lost, abandoned or injured. Funding for six of the awards were allocations from the Ruth Wright Endowment for Animals and the Jimmie Nelson Endowment. The Lynn County Animal Shelter also received a check for funds donated by people in the community through the Baby Grey Fund that the Lubbock Area Foundation established in response to the tragic fire that destroyed their building in January. The Lubbock Area Foundation initially donated $5,000 to the Lynn County Animal Shelter from a fund set up by Dr. Alice Virginia White.

“The Lubbock Area Foundation supports organizations that are on the front lines of meeting the needs here in the South Plains,” said Sheryl Cates, President of the Lubbock Area Foundation. “It is also important to us to get the word out about the terrific services that are being provided so that others in our community can support them too.”

Checks totaling $32,000 were presented to:

Easy R. Equine Rescue (Horse Rescue) Humane Society of West Texas (Wellness Clinic) Lynn County Animal Services (Baby Grey Fund) Morris Safe House (Vaccines) Post Animal Refuge Center (Vet services, operations) Saving Grace Pit Bull Rescue (The Pit Stop) South Plains Wildlife Rehab Center (Food, supplies, and vet care)

“Thanks to donors like the late Ruth Wright and the late Jimmie Nelson, animals are being saved and rehabilitated and these donors’ lives continue to have an impact here in our area,” Cates said.

“Each year a grants committee made up of animal experts meets to allocate these funds,” Cates continued. “This committee thoroughly reviews each organization’s proposal and even conducts site visits when they feel it’s appropriate. They really do their due diligence,” she added.

Several representatives from the groups brought rescued animals, including an owl from the South Plains Wildlife Rehab Center as well as dogs ready for adoption.
