CFWT Grant Story: Parenting Cottage

The Parenting Cottage Inc. provided 183 families with car seats through their education and assistance program and funding from the Community Foundation of West Texas. Additionally, the organization says the “car seat technicians employed by the Parenting Cottage were able to provide car seat checks and assistance in helping to install car seats correctly to the over 200 families served through the Parenting cottage’s home visitation program.”

A Parenting Cottage representative explains the program further: “The care seat education and assistance program served as the foundation for a new collaboration with the Lubbock Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in the South Plains. With the initiative of LAPD Detective Kyle Purdue a partnership was formed which will direct parents who, as a part of a traffic stop, would be cited for failure to restraint a child to the Parenting Cottage for assistance. Over 400 citations are handed out annually through traffic stops in the City of Lubbock, and many go to challenged or low-income families without the resources to purchase a car seat for their child. This partnership will allow the parents an opportunity to obtain a car seat from the Parenting Cottage rather than paying a fine up to $250.00.”

The Parenting Cottage’s car seat program remains the state’s largest car seat distribution program and will resume in June. Socially distanced services will be held with a reduced number of classes and registration opening on May 3rd.
